I work for a niche newspaper that also employs a paywall - in short, it works great for us. Used correctly, the concept works well for anyone who produces compelling content rather than simply regurgitating the content of others. Looking forward, Google's attempt at replacing paywalls seems compelling and definitely a step in the right direction(I'd like to give away all of our content for free), but it needs to be refined. There is no guarantee the surveys will deliver accurate results.
