A friend (now a very fine lawyer in London) travelled PNG during an election assisting in some fashion for several weeks if not months. She came home with a crimp in her hair and ridges on all her toe and fingernails from nutritional deficiencies. This is when I realised differences in standards of living were not theoretical.

- etcetcetcetceta 11d agoF is for respect, X is for doubt.
- hackernud3s 11d agoMalnutrition after 3 weeks? I mean, pack 21 multivitamins.
- TheOtherHobbes 11d agoI had ridges in my nails after an exceptionally bad bout of flu. It's not obscure or complex.
- jesterson 11d agoIndeed. Given average western diet, 3 weeks of malnutrition can only do good.
- Windchaser 11d agoHow is malnutrition ever good? "Mal", bad, in the latin
- hackernud3s 11d agoLosing weight is probably worth the tradeoff for most Americans.
- jesterson 10d agoNot just americans. With very few exclusions, we are all overweight, even people who do look great. The food we consuming is mostly crap. So it's a benefit almost for everyone.
- Windchaser 10d agoSure, losing weight is of benefit. But malnutrition is defined as a "serious deficiency" in the intake of energy and nutrients. Healthy weight loss is not malnutrition, and you can quite definitely be missing essential vitamins and be malnourished without losing weight. Heck, some of the worst western diets are both poor in vitamins/minerals and also still rich in calories.
- wodenokoto 11d agoShe’ll probably do that on her next 3 week trip.
- dzonga 11d agoif she was eating sweet potatoes how can that be ? unless she wasn't eating the sweet potatoes at all ?
