I usually use beta OSs, but I completely skipped MacOS 26 and 27, mostly because I heard terrible things about 26. Is 27 good enough to upgrade from Sequoia?

Is 27 good enough to upgrade from Sequoia? Is your answer the same when I tell you I have an M1 Pro Max?
- tymscar 17d agoI think its good especially if you are on an M1 generation. This is one of those releases with loads of fixes and speedups and not a whole lot of anything else
- gyomu 17d agoYes. I have a M1 8GB MacBook Air that I use as a lightweight travel machine, and macOS 26 utterly trashed the performance on it. Things I used to do fine (work on small Xcode projects) were completely unusable, to the point where I had to downgrade it to Sequoia. I've been running it on the macOS 27 beta all summer, and it's night and day. It's usable again.

- LeoPanthera 17d agoI would upgrade if only because you would otherwise stop receiving security patches at this point.
- jordand 17d agomacOS 15 should be getting security updates until at least the end of next year. I've been using it for ~2 years and I'll happily spend another year using it.
- LeoPanthera 17d agoCorrect me if I'm wrong but it's my understanding that macOS 15 security updates are only made available for devices for which 15 is the last compatible macOS version.

- jedberg 16d agoThat's not how it's worked in the past. They did security updates until three versions later released regardless of the hardware. What you may be thinking of is that there was some weirdness around Intel vs M series chips and how those got updates.
- MrDOS 16d agoParent is thinking iOS/iPadOS, not macOS. Older devices that are not capable of running iOS 26 are still receiving security updates for iOS 18, but any device supported by iOS 26 is not. It's a real hard push by Apple to get people to swallow Liquid Glass by withholding security updates.
- dzhiurgis 17d agoGenerally you wanna wait for 27.2 I’m on a same boat Should probably do clean install at this point - M1 still good enough and new laptops cost a fortune.
