How is the infotainment tablet in a 14 year old Model S performing these days? Haven't they progressively worsened its performance through software updates and then sold you a hardware upgrade to fix it for several thousand dollars? I'd rather just bring my phone, which gets replaced every 4-years or so anyway.

  I thought that was a pretty direct response to "And it doesn't make you bring your own phone and bluetooth speaker for infotainment." As far as I'm concerned, not being able to bring your phone to the infotainment system is a negative, not something to brag about. I had my last car until it was 19 years old, and I have zero faith that an in-car computer will perform adequately for that long. The other specs of the Model S are still very impressive and I don't have anything to add about on those.

    I think that expecting a 2012 car to have Apple Carplay (launched 2014) or Android Auto (launched 2015) support is a bit unreasonable, is all.

      Ah that's fair, I forgot how old the Model S is comparatively. Although in a normal car of that era (say a 2012 Kia Rio) you could add CarPlay today for about $220. It's unfortunate that the big tablets have made it impossible to upgrade features like this anymore. I had bluetooth audio units in two cars that long predated standard bluetooth. Now the screen is too central to the operation of everything that you're stuck with 2012 capabilities for the life of the car. Some features added by $3000 infotainment computer replacement, but only what Tesla wants to give you, which is still not CarPlay. Slate IMO is going a little far by not even having built-in speakers, but hey at least whatever system someone decides to add to it doesn't need to last 20 years and can be swapped out without losing the air conditioning controls and the backup camera.
