This is actually a great feature. I was rescuing an old disk with rsync and didn't want to restart the file transfer whenever it encountered an IO error, but rsync has (to my knowledge) no option to keep temporary files when an error occurs. Turns out you can `exec 5<>/path/to/file`, then `cat /proc/$$/fd/5 > /path/to/file` if it gets deleted.
