This page shows which stories have the heaviest penalty applied to their Hacker News rank -- stories that rank lower than they should given their raw HN ranking formula.
- yodon 22d agoSo, maybe it's a huge conspiracy, or, alternatively, maybe it's a case of a person who attempted to reverse engineer the HN ranking algorithm missing a couple terms in the equation. Everyone can apply their own form of Occam's Razor. Some will conclude conspiracy, others, missed second and third order terms.

- jwarden 20d agoCreate of Quality New here. You are probably right here. The raw ranking formula is right, but I am lumping in the additional adjustments from the flamewar filter, etc. with "penalties." I will clarify that.
- dgellow 22d agoLooks like the anti flamewar algorithm is working well. Also, are you sure that flags aren’t contributing?
- jwarden 20d agoYes I should update the text on the page. Currently it says: > This page shows stories whose rank on the Hacker News front page is significantly lower than their raw rank, indicating that they have been penalized by Hacker News moderators. But flags, the anti-flamewar algorithm, and other automatic adjustments that aren't moderator actions may definitely be contributing.
