$200 per machine per year. You use to just buy the manual and you had it forever. Farms sit on 1-2% profit margins on average but with a 30% swing in potential yield. They don't like subscription services because their yearly income is unreliable at best and they don't have any margin to waste on bs they might not use.
- laughing_man 14d agoFor a large commercial operation, $200/year is nothing, but it's enough to hurt the smaller guys.
- noisy_boy 14d ago$200/year, now.
- laughing_man 13d agoTo put this in perspective, a large John Deere tractor with a corn header costs in the neighborhood of $1.25 million.
- laughing_man 13d agoEh... I was thinking of harvesters, not tractors.
- noefingway 13d agoA buddy of mine just bought 2 John Deere 8R tractors, he says he got a deal at $1.6 mil. $900k for the tracked machine and $700K for the wheeled. His combines are close to $1mil when you add in the grain heads.
- artisinal 13d agoWhere I am from most farmers are millionaires. They are all corporations. 200 per machine per year is nothing to them.
- vidarh 13d agoIn the US, according to USDA, the median total family income for a farming family is ca $108k
- SideQuark 13d agoWhich is a huge amount over the median all family income in the US of 83k. So in that sense farmers are richer than average Americans.
- anon7000 13d agoI would not say $1-$2k/mo extra income counts as a huge amount richer. It’s like 58th percentile by family income. I don’t really think it makes sense to call solidly middle class income rich in any sense…
- SideQuark 9d agoIt’s 25% richer. That’s huge amount. Most people, if given a 25% income boost, could make a lot of quality of life changes.
- staticautomatic 13d agoThey’re asset millionaires and maybe gross revenue millionaires, but not typically net income millionaires.
- artisinal 13d agoMost millionaires are asset millionaires. Almost nobody has a million in their savings account.
- tancop 12d agoFarms are some of the least liquid assets. Not because it's that hard to sell them but when your whole income depends on owning something you can't just decide to give it up. And the social networks you depend on for things like finding seasonal workers or helping out after a natural disaster break down if you move.
- like_any_other 13d agoIt's not about the money. It's the thin edge of the wedge, separating you from control over your own property - and handing that control to someone else. Arguing about what a reasonable price is, or how they can use vs. abuse that control, is like arguing how the prison guards should treat you, instead of trying to escape.
