Sam Altman and Elon Musk Support Dario Amodei's Proposal to Pace AI Development

- rvz 21d agoWhy now? China will request a deal on their terms instead of agreeing to any deal that the US will put forward in order for them to agree on this 'proposal'. So it doesn't matter what Sam, Dario and Elon say. Slowing down is too late and the US has no leverage to get China to agree anyway. At the same time, some AI companies are preparing for an IPO after achieving "AGI".
- techblueberry 21d agoChina is distilling our models aren't they? I’m not saying China is zero risk, but I am saying that America seems particularly skilled at putting our enemies on this idealized pedestal to justify whatever we’re trying to justify.
- bwb 21d agoThis won't work, China/USA are in a race. How do you create a treaty with binding provisions when you have such incompetent leadership in the USA?
- Zigurd 20d agoYou are right it won't work, but a race with China is in the imaginations of politicians taken in by AI CEOs scaremongering. The Chinese are probably willing to stand by and watch the US overbuild AI data centers.
- bwb 20d agonah, it is a race; nation-states are in the midst of a big upheaval. Nobody is going to give up a possible advantage.
- Zigurd 20d agoIt's the 1960s missile gap in the 21st century, and the only people who aren't susceptible are the Russians because they can't afford table stakes. The Chinese have 47 humanoid robot companies and they need fewer than one. They have apartments for half again as many people as can urbanize, and that's a mania we should have mirrored. Our dead malls aren't big enough to convert into data centers so we have to build Brobdingnagian metal sheds so that we're not caught short in the GPU gap. Feh.
