And now the ladder is effectively pulled up behind those pre-AI engineers. What does the pipeline for newcomers look like? How do those who come after achieve that same level of depth and understanding in a world where AI permeates everything?
- simonw 14d agoI'm seeing mixed signals on this one. On the one hand you get stories like Shopify and Cloudflare expanding their intern programs because interns can get so much more done now. On the other hand there seems to be a measurable slowdown in hiring of juniors at many companies, since seniors can cover the ground that used to be farmed out to the juniors. My hope is that LLM assistance will help motivated newcomers accelerate the rate at which they learn the craft, similar to how my rate of improvement as a senior has been accelerated.
