Tablets are great devices for consuming media, but they suck for typing and suck for creating. Laptops are a lot better for creating but I still haven't found anything that can match a good, solid desktop with multiple monitors and a clicky keyboard.

We will be stuck for a while with desktops and laptops, but I can imagine surface like tablets to be common for developers and writers at some point, since it can be used like a lightweight laptop.
