I thought this was a joke at first. I do not understand the demand for such a device at all.
It's not pretty, it doesn't look very functional. The selling point is "a bigger screen", but never once in my life have I looked at my phone and thought "Make it bigger."
- adamors 23d agoWhat is a joke? Foldable phones have existed for years at this point, if anything Apple is catching up. And plenty of people want bigger phones.
- adamtaylor_13 23d agoI'd levy the same critique at other foldable phones. I don't know a single person, personally, that owns one. Compared to the hundreds of people I know with an iPhone it's crazy to me that the market is supposedly big enough for Apple to put this much R&D into a device like this.
- vachina 23d agoI rarely see people use their foldable with it unfolded out in the public. And even when they do use it unfolded, whatever they’re consuming has two huge black bars top and bottom. This may change as content creators adapt. What Huawei and Samsung have shown is that there is little usecase to foldables. And I do not believe Apple can create any usecase not already known.
- firmretention 23d agoIMO, price is the problem. I can afford a folding phone, but I can't justify the cost for a tertiary computing device. Whenever possible I'd rather use a desktop, followed by a laptop. If I was more dependent on my phone it might be different.
- stuff4ben 23d ago> if anything Apple is catching up That's been Apple MO for a long time. They may not be the first to market on a new tech, but when they do deliver, it's more advanced and higher quality than the competitors. It's a good strategy IMO.
- tscolari 23d agoFor me the only advantage of a foldable phone would be to make it smaller, not to double the actual size.
- luxuryballs 23d agoyeah but this is about iPhones, not counterfeit ones
- abricq 23d ago> I do not understand the demand for such a device at all. You can have TikTok and Instagram-Reels opened at the same time... Don't you want that ?!
- profstasiak 23d agoAmazing comment, strong dropbox comment vibes
- jonplackett 23d agoI have bought a new iPhone every time they made the screen bigger. That’s pretty much my main reason for upgrading.
- jnsie 23d agoTo me it serves two needs really well: - A phone that fits in the hand for those who have long desired a smaller iPhone. This isn't me, but I know a lot of people who bemoaned the death of the smaller line of iPhones and many have held onto their old phones longer than they otherwise would have (not a bad thing, just a data point...) - A versatile device that allows switching of modes as required. Great for commutes, travel, etc. It's not for everyone and I'm normally a Pro Max user so definitely don't fit into the first category, but I'm really tempted on this one
- crossroadsguy 23d ago> A phone that fits in the hand for those Right. I must revisit the "What It Means For Something to Fit In a Hand" chapter from my UG's Common Sense 101. It's been a decade.. more actually.
- carefulfungi 23d agoBeing able to read the smaller text on smartwatches and smaller phones, for many of us was a luxury of youth. I'd rather carry a larger phone than a smaller phone and a pair of reading glasses.
- jkahrs595 23d agoIt’s perfectly fine to acknowledge that you are not the target audience without coming across like a child complaining about pepperonis on their cheese pizza. https://counterpointresearch.com/en/insights/global-foldable-shipments-to-hit-100-million-cumulative-milestone-by-end-of-2026 https://counterpointresearch.com/en/insights/global-foldable...
