As a child I did not see it as violent
- locknitpicker 23d ago> As a child I did not see it as violent That's the problem. Hitting a tied up animal until it breaks is clearly a violent affair, similar how hanging puppets in nooses or putting a doll in a guillotine. I'm sure that there are kids growing up in places where bullfights are common thinking that torturing and killing a bull in a party-like atmosphere is fine.
- tyre 23d agoOne of the incredible powers of childlike imagination is the ability to differentiate between hitting a piñata and hitting an actual animal.
- locknitpicker 23d ago> One of the incredible powers of childlike imagination is the ability to differentiate between hitting a piñata and hitting an actual animal. People get arrested for hanging dolls on trees with nooses around their necks. Some are prosecuted as hate crimes. Do you think this is an issue from a lack of childlike imagination?
- applfanboysbgon 23d agoDo you see Pokemon as encouraging a culture of accepting dogfighting/cockfighting rings?
- gambiting 23d agoI mean yeah, absolutely. But a child growing up in a western society is unlikely to encounter either of those. But generally I do see Pokemon as violent and I wouldn't let my 5 year old watch it quite yet. When he's a bit older I hope he enjoys playing through the original games and the OG tv show with me, but I see parents playing the TV show for their 4-5 year olds and I think that's just too young. Same with Spidey and friends and few other shows made "for children" which absolutely promote violence despite the colourful aesthetic.
- jhbadger 23d agoIt literally is a reference to the Japanese hobby of collecting bugs and making them fight each other, so yes? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insect_fighting https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insect_fighting
- w4der 23d agoAs a kid I don't remember, or have pictures of, an animal-looking piñata, they were just colorful boxes full of candy and things.
- GJim 23d ago> Hitting a tied up animal until it breaks is clearly a violent affair, I think you will find it isn't a real animal.
- sevenzero 23d agoChildren have no concept of violence or empathy or right or wrong. Children often are extremely violent to other kids and sometimes even adults. They kick they scream they punch and they destroy objects. It's on the parents to teach them these concepts and its fun to have settings in which that behavior is allowed.
- WalterBright 23d ago> Children have no concept of violence or empathy or right or wrong This is not correct. I remember having a sense of shame when I was 4 when I tried to hurt another kid. Kids will also hide the things they do wrong, because they know it is wrong.

- lynx97 23d ago> ... because they know it is wrong No. They hide the things they do wrong because they learnt there are consequences and they dont want to get caught.
- watwut 23d agoNo, not all kids are a little sociopaths. They in fact hide things they have no experience of being reprimanded or punished for, because they feel bad about them. Kids do care about other kids, animals or adults in their lives. They do feel empathy - underdeveloped and sometimes weird, but they display it very clearly. And they do care about right and wrong.
- WalterBright 22d agoNot my experience. I accidentally killed a baby bird when I was little. It still hurts when I think about it. Some kids are indeed savages. But not all of us.
- close04 23d ago> because they know it is wrong Or they know they'll be told it was wrong. Children start knowing nothing then they slowly absorb what they're told again and again, and what they see around them until they feel it. They go from knowing nothing, to knowing what the adults told them, to internalizing that and feeling it rather than just knowing it (maybe these 2 concepts fully overlap in other people's minds). But until they do get all of that, they'll spend a lot of time plucking wings off of insects, burning ants with a magnifying glass, pulling the cat by the tail, or throwing rocks at dogs and frogs.
