There is a third alternative space here: functions that are compatible with C function pointers, dynamically created by libffi. With these you can implement upward and downward funargs. E.g. make Lisp dialect whose lambdas can be bound to C callbacks.
I have test cases in TXR where qsort is used to sort an array of strings:
