Yes, it would take more space, that's definitely a drawback. You might end up having to have 2 staves for each part. I'm not really serious about replacing it,

Yes, it would take more space, that's definitely a drawback. You might end up having to have 2 staves for each part.
I'm not really serious about replacing it, more like writing your own OS: it's fun to do and you get a better understanding of why the existing systems work.
