Let them have their minority government and see what they table for consideration. From their actions, people will judge them.
The won because people think complex problems have simple, untried solutions that are common sense. They hate "them", they're stoked on (social) media. They feel put upon and denied their rewards. Same old, same old with more effective communication paths.
- irishcoffee 25d agoThe simple, untried solution is to stop being the export dumping ground of china. But when anyone says that the knee-jerk reaction is “you’re an awful person for saying that” FT has had a few articles about it recently, here is one about a historical vote at the G20 summit. https://www.ft.com/content/dcefdf76-9bac-4b34-80c2-eab80b559f53?syn-25a6b1a6=1 https://www.ft.com/content/dcefdf76-9bac-4b34-80c2-eab80b559...
- jleyank 25d ago"Cheap goods" is quite a problem, as basically the US, possibly all of North America loves their cheap Walmart items. Screw how they were made... They're usually the cheapest. Replace "Walmart" with whatever large box store goes lowest price as appropriate.
- palmotea 24d ago> "Cheap goods" is quite a problem, as basically the US, possibly all of North America loves their cheap Walmart items. Screw how they were made... They're usually the cheapest. Replace "Walmart" with whatever large box store goes lowest price as appropriate. Loves? Or driven to them by necessity? The whole "China Shock" "bargain" for many was something like: you'll lose your jobs, status, and security; but "cheap Walmart items" should make your lowered circumstances more bearable.
- jleyank 24d agoI think they could pay 0.20 - 0.50 dollars higher at Target or a different bulk store.
- gls2ro 25d agoThat is not a simple solution in practice, only on social media. It will make prices go high, which will spiral in a lot of things and will increase the cost of living in the present even more for the vulnerable part of the population of a country. of course it can be the proper solution for the future but saying it is simple is a huge huge understatement of the political and economical will needed to make it happen.
- owebmaster 24d ago"China made me do this" isn't a good excuse for fascism and it won't go well.
- vkou 24d agoIncreasing COL for everyone is an interesting solution, I wonder how well it would do for your re-election prospects. The United States voted a shit-slinging gibbon in over anxiety of a minor COVID COL increase. (That he caused, but everyone has forgotten his role in it.)
- kkrepp 25d agoI don‘t think people believe in the effectiveness of the proposed solutions. It’s more about “the old parties didn’t have any solutions” and “political promises and proposed solutions don’t work anyways”. So why not try a new party
- doom2 24d ago> political promises and proposed solutions don’t work anyways This is very effective for populist parties because in a way it keeps them from being held accountable by their own voters. When I hear interviews with Trump voters being faced with evidence of how Trump hasn't kept one campaign promise or another, it's exactly the sentiment above: politicians never keep their promises anyways and Trump is no different but we like him so we'll stick with him.
- UncleMeat 24d agoI don't know about german politics, but here in the US this isn't what I observe. My aunt is a republican lobbyist. She is also a drunk. She gets drunk and texts us her unfiltered thoughts. She genuinely believes that the bulk of racial minorities in the US should be expelled from the country, that Trump is making progress towards that goal, and that the US would be a better place if it was just white people. She isn't just motivated by frustration with the liberals. She is motivated by the racial purity policies of the GOP.
- red-iron-pine 24d agoGOP voter: "hell yeah, drain the swamp!" [proceeds to fall for it, again]
- gumby 25d agoThey are smarter than that: Siegmund says he doesn’t want to form a government. After all then people could see how they function in office, and that might hurt the AfD in upcoming national elections. Better to wait until the AfD is in power at the national level.
- gumby 24d agoThis is the general consensus in DE (I watched the election during the day on TV). AfD is a cancer on the electorate.
