Trump homeland security chief says ICE agents could be sent to polling places
- throw0101a 29d agoSee perhaps 18 U.S. Code § 592: > Whoever, being an officer of the Army or Navy, or other person in the civil, military, or naval service of the United States, orders, brings, keeps, or has under his authority or control any troops or armed men at any place where a general or special election is held, unless such force be necessary to repel armed enemies of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both; and be disqualified from holding any office of honor, profit, or trust under the United States. * https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/592 https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/592 Per DoJ guidance this also means that FBI agents cannot conduct investigations inside polling places on Election Day and deputy U.S. marshals cannot be stationed at open polls because they are armed while on duty: * https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/GOVPUB-J-PURL-gpo145659/pdf/GOVPUB-J-PURL-gpo145659.pdf https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/GOVPUB-J-PURL-gpo145659/...
- someguynamedq 29d agoAnd who defines "unless such force be necessary to repel armed enemies of the United States"?
- latexr 29d agoThere seems to always be an encoded loophole, eh? Though while marking anyone an “enemy” is subjective to interpretation, “armed” not so much. Unless, of course, you bring a sandwich with you to the polls. https://www.mediaite.com/crime/footlong-and-fancy-free-d-c-jury-acquits-protester-who-lobbed-sandwich-at-ice-agent/ https://www.mediaite.com/crime/footlong-and-fancy-free-d-c-j...
- foolin 29d agoVoters had better show up naked which may counteract the attempts to limit the vote to the christian right.
- general1465 29d agoMore less irrelevant. How many polling places is there, how many ICE agents do they have?
- Timon3 28d agoAccording to the NCSL, ~96k polling places vs. 22k+ ICE agents (number steadily increasing). How could anyone even hope to affect the results by only interfering in >20% of voting locations? Obviously irrelevant.
- general1465 28d agoYes irrelevant, because they never operate in units of 1, they are always in big groups.
- Timon3 28d agoAh, and that is an immutable fact of the universe. I forgot, good point. Luckily it doesn't matter that even interfering at 1% of polling places is very likely enough to sway the US election, right?
- general1465 27d ago1. Considering how much of a swing is expected it is a statistical error 2. You have to register to vote, so you have already proven that you are a citizen, thus the whole theater with ICE is double irrelevant.
- Timon3 27d agoYou gotta be joking. Did you miss all the cases where ICE just took people who were carrying proof of citizenship? Did you miss the allegations by conservatives that massive amounts of illegal immigrants are voting all over the country, but especially in blue states?
