You forget about trade. Any country can be immune to geopolitical drama if they don't depend on others for energy or finances, or food, or steel, or electronics, or... To be immune, a country needs to be self-sufficient in everything it can't do without: food, energy, raw materials, manufactured stuff, military hardware, financial services. Plus it needs to have a strong enough military to defend it all. That's non-trivial to achieve. It's far more than just energy self-sufficiency.
