I was actually thinking about this yesterday. A government's function is analogous to a parent, i.e. protecting the people it's responsible is priority #1. If it consistently refuses to do that, then that's not quite a government anymore, by definition.
- card_zero 1mo agoOh like a nanny, or a big brother?

- card_zero 1mo agoI just don't like the bit about how the government is your caring parent. No it isn't. It's protection against worse governments and other mafia organizations, and against the governments of other countries. If you start thinking of it as your caring parent, you'll look to it to do everything for you, and to do everything right, and you'll be in continual struggle against everybody else about the right way to do things, hoping that government force will be on your side. "Why can't we have a good government!" you'll say, blaming it on the voting system.
- andai 1mo ago> If you start thinking of it as your caring parent, you'll look to it to do everything for you Well we could start by not turning a blind eye to hundreds of thousands of systematic child rapes. That's the engineering problem I'm trying to solve here. (You gotta start somewhere!) I am open to suggestions though. (Not caring what kind of country those children will inherit appears to be a closely related failure.) p.s. Deleting the mass need for an omnipotent parent figure is also a worthwhile project, though I think it deserves separate treatment.
- card_zero 1mo agoFair enough, I say (belatedly).
- KetoManx64 1mo agoThe only way that a state is analogous to a government is if you lived in an abusive household where your parents had a monopoly on violence, forced you to give you a portion of anything you ever eaneed and threatened to put you in the cellar if you didn't do as they said and or threatened you with death if you kept disobeying.
- 0dayz 1mo agoSure if we also proclaim the opposite is to be parentless and as such statistically like to be homeless and constantly having others steal and exploit you because they got lucky.
- KetoManx64 1mo agoYeah, it really sucks. They brutal childhoods and lives and you need to get them actual help through churches and non-profits who deal with the core issue, not just paste over it with endless welfare checks from soulless government social workers.
- 0dayz 1mo agoIt does suck and it's awful that the burden is on small underfunded volunteers instead of a dedicated pay as you go system.
