As a cat lover this only strengthens my opinion that they should stay inside the house, humans cause enough damage to the ecosystem without needlessly unleashing pretty efficient predators for no gain.
- HelloUsername 1mo ago> Cats should stay inside they house Isn't putting them on a leash, or having them wear a bell around their neck outside, enough for all parties?

- stnikolauswagne 1mo agoMhh, intriguing. I would also say they would at least need to be neutered in that case so they dont reproduce with the feral population, but from a predatory perspective that would probably be fine then. I would still not let our cats go out, my wife is pregnant so toxoplasmosis is very scary and bell or not we would be terrified of them getting lost or getting run over by a car or worse.

- teeray 1mo agoImagine trying to put a harness on jello, and you will understand the difficulty of doing this on some cats.
- mugiseyebrows 1mo agoby that logic, humans should stay inside too
- stnikolauswagne 1mo agoThe human equivalent is poaching/hunting without a permit, which humans are not allowed. It's not like we can issue permits to cats and make them follow it. Cats also routinely go into other peoples houses and either get themselves stuck or hunt rats/mice there, also something that humans generally are not allowed to do.

- pseudohadamard 1mo agoMost cats do tend to stay inside the house, or briefly go outside before coming back in again. Some animal-protection org here once published a story about the number of birds killed by cats which worked out to each cat in the country killing something like three birds a day, including all the cats who never go outdoors or who are way to comfortable to ever chase anything more mobile than a food bowl. After that I stopped paying attention to claims about bird numbers. Not to mention that the cats who aren't too lazy to chase things are far more likely to go for ground-based animals like rats and mice than birds. As in, the rats that would be raiding bird nests if the cats didn't keep their numbers down.
- runamok 1mo agoYes, I did want to understand the source for those kinds of numbers. I'd assume we would see dead birds all over the place if this was the case.
