- sph 2mo agoJesus those videos are upsetting. Poor people.
- marcyb5st 2mo agoNever seen anything of the sort apart from the Tsunamis in Japan and Indian ocean. This event is the "big brother" of what happened in Italy in 2022 with the Marmolada glacier collapse which was tiny compared to this. Additionally, the orography in Tibet/Nepal is much more dramatic (higher elevations, steeper slopes, narrower valleys). I am really astonished by the videos circulating online.
- stefanoco 2mo agoAnother similar tragedy (although with totally different reasons) was the Vajont Dam mega tsunami in 1963 in north Italy (est. up to 2500 deaths) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vajont_Dam https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vajont_Dam
- comrade1234 2mo agoI wonder how long they had from the collapse to it reaching villages. Here in Switzerland glaciers and thawing mountains are monitored pretty closely with sensors. Villages are evacuated when it starts to get dangerous.
- lightedman 2mo agoThe sheer amount of land mass that moved triggered seismometers all over the place. One seismometer registered a 5.2M. To put this in perspective, on the surface of the earth, quake energy does not travel very well. For this to make a seismometer register that high would require an absolutely terrifying massive amount of land to be moving on the surface. Current estimates are the slide itself was roughly half a mile wide. That's absolutely massive.
- ryukoposting 2mo agoCool, a link where, if I try to watch the video, it instead opens the Play Store to nag me about an app. Twitter links should be banned from HN.
- kevinthedigger 2mo agoChina really needs to do something in that part of the world, reduce their carbon footprint, it’s killing the ice.
- JohnnyLarue 2mo agoThey very much are. More, perhaps, than any other country.
- kevinthedigger 2mo agoYes, in contributing to global climate change.
- marcyb5st 2mo agoDo the per Capita calculation. Why can US and Canadian folks emit 4x as much as the average Chinese citizen? Do you believe you have the right to do so only because you are born in the West? I believe that if it wasn't producing shit for US its emissions would be vastly lower.
- kevinthedigger 2mo agoDoes the earth use per capita? Didn’t think so
