Not a natural calamity: it is being done to us knowingly

- camillomiller 2mo agoI wholeheartedly agree, yet I don’t want this type of information delivered this way. It’s just not effective. My mind doesn’t need changing, I am vegetarian, I’m mindful about traveling, I don’t own a car. Yet individual responsibility is useless in the face of such a collective crisis, and now another day is ruined by the acknowledgment that I can do fuck all about this because I have no control over the power structures that perpetuate our predicament.
- defrost 2mo agoFrom the same author, being scared is half the fun, deep breath, relax, let the mountain wash over you: * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gViRfoNmGOg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gViRfoNmGOg
- unfitted2545 2mo agoThere's a freedom in admitting it's not gonna get better
- red-iron-pine 2mo ago"the train is coming and I'm not even gonna try to stop it or get out of the way" that's not freedom that's quitting
- ablation 2mo agoThe people and organisations perpetuating these crimes against humanity are not anonymous. They have names, addresses, shareholders, boards, lobbyists. They should be named and shamed. Part of me fears that we will soon be unable to do so openly or effectively, with the rise of censorship and surveillance and looming control of public discourse. It's hard not to fall victim to hopelessness sometimes. I'm trying.
- ZeroGravitas 2mo agoIn some ways the destruction of our political, journalistic (as they hint at in this piece) and scientific cultures and institutions is even worse. And again done knowingly, by the same people.
- spl757 2mo agoPeople do not understand what the reality of large portions of land that are concentrated on the coasts are going to underwater sooner than anyone probably thinks. Exxon knew in the 70s, they wrote reports about it, that's all known and verifiable. It's the lag effect, stupid. The last time there was this much Co2 in the atmosphere, because most of the population lives near the coast, the place you are sitting and reading this will be underwater and on a timeline not of centuries, but decades. We just have not seen the actual effects of the thresholds we have crossed yet. It's an inevitable runaway train. The surface of Venus, our virual twin, is about 867°F, because of runaway greenhouse heating due to a buildup of Co2. Just in case anyone forgets just how powerful of a greenhouse gas Co2 is.

- Klapaucius 2mo agoI see. I admire what an independent thinker you are. Oh, so good at being an independent thinker.

- Kim_Bruning 2mo agoYou do have to take into account the europeans who all suffered through something like 5 heat waves this season. That's a bit hard to talk around.
- fragmede 2mo agobecause human psychology is what it is, 1.5 degrees C is the wrong number to cite. 1.5 degrees C converts to 2 million TWh of energy. 2 million TERA watt hours! 120 million Hiroshima bombs worth of thermal energy. Spread over 100 years, that’s about 3,400 Hiroshima-equivalents per day, continuously. That sounds way scarier than 1.5 degrees C.
- deleted 2mo ago[deleted]
- Xmd5a 2mo agoThe earth receives about 2800 Hiroshima-equivalents per second from the sun. Just keep the sun shining one second longer every day for one century is all it takes for the 1.5° delta we're observing today. > human psychology is what it is indeed

- OroPla 2mo agoLast time this was done it didn't help at all. Why do you think it would be different this time?
- red-iron-pine 2mo agowhat is this last time you speak of? cuz it absolutely threw off the yoke of Kings how many guillotine events were you a part of?
- OroPla 2mo agoLet's go with the French Revolution, since you mentioned guillotines. What improvement was made exactly?
- ai_ja_nai 2mo agoI don't understand who should be this article for. Europeans, that are doing everything according to the plan to reduce emissions? Chinese, who are going to save our neck by converting an entire nation that is 25% of world population to electrical/renewable/nuclear? Americans? It's the wrong news outlet, then.
