I love this, really, competition on a global scale is good for us, bad for greedy US corporations.
For example, I consider Meta as bigger threat to society, than Xiaomi, DeepSeek, z.ai and other top Chinese companies (haven't used Chinese social media, so can't comment about its content)
- ford 1mo agoDo you still believe this considering those companies live and die by the CCP? Would you feel differently if scale was reversed and Meta was the upstart trying to compete with Xiaomi/etc? I'm right there with you questioning Meta's value for society, but I do believe it has less opportunity for abuse/manipulation
- throwaw12 1mo ago> those companies live and die by the CCP I don't care about internal politics of a state, as long as they are not killing people deliberately on a daily basis or invading other countries and killing their people. How government is structured is up to Chinese people to decide > Would you feel differently if scale was reversed and Meta was the upstart trying to compete with Xiaomi/etc? It's not only about scale and upstart, it's also about how much are they harming society.
- reliabilityguy 1mo ago> I don't care about internal politics of a state, as long as they are not killing people deliberately What about forced cultural assimilation and re-education camps? Or, as long as it’s confined to the borders of a country doing so, it is fine? > How government is structured is up to Chinese people to decide Funny take given the events of 1989
- aaroninsf 1mo agoIt would be quite a demonstration of supremacy for any Chinese firm to to equal or exceed the damage done (and ongoing) to western society by meta.

- creaturemachine 1mo agoConsidering Meta lives and dies by the White House, where abuse and manipulation have become SOP, I'm not sure the CCP stacks up as the boogeyman anymore.
- ford 1mo agoIMO opinions of this variety often come from being misinformed or under-exposed to exactly how oppressive the CCP is. The US government isn't perfect, but it values various freedoms much more extensively than the CCP https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uyghurs#Human_rights_abuses_against_Uyghurs_in_Xinjiang https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uyghurs#Human_rights_abuses_ag...

- apparent 1mo agoWhen you say "greedy US corporations" do you mean that these US corporations are uniquely greedy, or that all corporations are greedy, and this is bad for the ones in the US? Do you think that corporations in China, which in many cases are subsidized by the government, are also greedy?
- throwaw12 1mo agoall for profit companies are greedy by their nature, but US companies are on a different level because you can 'buy' the government by lobbying or supporting their election campaigns or break the law and eventually make sure law is changed to fit your business (e.g. first taxi medallions adjusted the law for themselves, and then Uber) Same is very difficult to do in China (look what happened to Jack Ma) or in Europe, because you have to follow some regulations
- ahmed_1000 1mo agoThinking there's no corruption in China because Jack Ma got sent to a dungeon for being too mouthy is actually comical
- robotpepi 1mo agothere's less corruption than in the US nowadays.
- ahmed_1000 1mo agoHow would you know?
- cromka 1mo agoPresumably based on the number of news headlines where China publicly executes for corruption.

- wmf 1mo agoSpeaking of "us" it seems that Samsung/Mediatek/Xiaomi/Huawei SoCs are not available in the US.
- dyauspitr 1mo agoI hate China’s form of government for everything except rapid development. I don’t trust as single one of their companies.
