I suspect this is a very Eurocentric view. Take India for a counter-example, it has always been full of weirdoes starting their own cults.
- smcg 1mo agoIndia has/had a caste-based system. For many people they could not act outside of their caste.

- 59percentmore 1mo agoMost of the essay is pretty unapologetically Eurocentric, particularly with the talk of frontiers. I appreciated it being upfront about that.
