There is no fairness argument, only ignorance. For amateur sports, giving even a little bit of a shit is just pathetic. The risk of accusing cis girs/women of being trans is obviously extremely damaging. And discouraging trans folks from participating in amateur sports is also incredibly cruel. For professional or top-tier competitive sports, virtually every sports organization has had rules in place to handle this for decades. The IOC started using testosterone levels as the barometer for fairness in 2003. The entire right-wing apparatus works by feigning ignorance, pretending nobody has ever thought about the fairness of trans folks in sports, all to infuriate easily suggestible rubes. It's beyond absurd.
