I believe therapy is not just for mental health issues, just like physical therapy is not just for post-surgery or what have you. Even if you have zero mental health issues, it can help cope with grief, stress, self-destructive behaviors, executive function, and more.
I feel similarly to physical therapy. Even if you work out, physical therapy can introduce you to new ways to optimize your body that you would never know about. And it's specific to you and your body.
I also agree not every personality quirk needs correction, nor is the goal of therapy correction. It's management. We all have things in our head that we are constantly managing, and we have to manage it if we want to be successful and maintain our relationships. Therapy helps finding out new management strategies, specific to you and how your mind tends to work.
- teiferer 2mo ago> new ways to optimize your body That's the key point here: Why does everything about the body (physical or mental) need to be optimized? If that's your kink, go for it. But acknowledge that not having that kink is fine too.
- preg_match 2mo agoWell it’s not a kink, I don’t have a 4AM morning routine or anything like that. I just think it could be helpful. I think toughing it out on your own is something society really praises, but it’s generally not a good idea. I think people view help as a sign of weakness, but it’s not. I also think that perspective alone is enough to go to therapy, as it is self-destructive.
- teiferer 2mo agoI do agree that avoiding therapy at all cost (cause going would be considered weak) is wrong. I also hold that going to therapy no matter what (cause not going would be considered weak) even though there is no problem to be solved is wrong as well.
