Europe/Canada should ban chatgpt/anthropic and say "ok we will use chinese models for our vibe coding I guess" and watch the stock market implode overnight. Remenber when they tried to ban non-US citizens from using Fable? best to remove that sword of damocles now regardless
- 627467 2mo agoThis has always been an option pre-AI (block MS, block Google, etc). They never done that before why would they do that now?
- morkalork 2mo agoBecause they were allies and not in economic war before?
- notahacker 2mo agoThe US wasn't, for the most part, treating them as an adversary before
- consp 2mo agoThe examples you provide are way more integrated into governments and organizations. LLMs are not even in the same country let alone postal code.
- watutalkinbout 1mo agoThe US is not an ally.

- bad_haircut72 2mo agothe advantage US labs have is that we use them. If chinese labs got 1 years worth of usage from everyone else as their daily driver, they would catchup if not overtake the US based firms - assuming you even think that they're truly behind anyway.
- ericmay 2mo agoOk. Don’t use them and then we’ll just leverage China’s models too. What’s the problem? Why does the US need to lead in AI if Europe (and everyone else) prefers to partner with China? We can just partner with them too. They can have Taiwan. We can pull out of NATO and bring our troops home from overseas bases around the world. It’ll save us a lot of military spend and then we don’t have to play these games anymore. Besides we can just distill Chinese modules and release open weights like they do now.
- bad_haircut72 2mo agoI mean this would be great haha, America voluntarily ceding its position as the supreme global power without bloodshed. Its the best we could hope for. Now watch the US show that this is the one course they will never take.

- bad_haircut72 2mo agoIm anti MAGA because it was obvious from the beginning it was a pack of lies. He ran on "no news wars" and then started one. Ad nauseum. There no point debating policy with the Mafia who are taking over your block. If it were about policy, yes I do think Im actually pretty aligned with what average Anerican voters want. The important thing when dealing with Americans is to pay no attention to what they say as that is all "PR", you only need to observe what they do. Most Americans dont know this even about themselves, which is why they end up with a guy like Donald Trump
- 8note 2mo ago> He ran on "no news wars" and then started one. that's a weird example to give about it being lies from the beginning when he spent 4 years not being at active war with iran
- pezezin 2mo ago> If Europeans don’t care about democracy in Taiwan maybe we shouldn’t either. The USA has a long history of organizing coup d'états on democratic governments to prop up their own dictators. Let's be honest here, you guys don't care about Taiwanese democracy, only about keeping TSMC running.

- hackable_sand 2mo agoHeads up, you would want to keep the sword of damocles in that case, no matter how illusory.
- inigyou 2mo agoThey would have to make a free chat interface that uses Chinese models. It isn't about the technical implementation, it's about the interface and the ease of use.
- brazukadev 2mo agowhy? I'd bet there aren't that many people that would riot if they couldn't use chatgpt anymore.
- inigyou 1mo agoBecause if you want people to use a thing you have to make it appealing. Otherwise they won't.
- RugnirViking 1mo agoDon't most (all?) such models have homepages with free interfaces? https://www.kimi.com/en https://www.kimi.com/en https://qwen.ai/home https://qwen.ai/home ?
- ygjb 1mo agoThat might have been the case two years ago, but there is no shortage of decent open source solutions that meet or exceed most business use cases. I am sure some enterprising consulting firm will come along and offer integration of those + Canada located inference infra + OSS models (Chinese, or otherwise). I know that there is at least one Canadian inference provider, Augure, but I haven't tried them yet, as well as a few actual model developers in Canada.
- Marsymars 2mo agoI'm not a country, but on Monday I'll be enabling Kimi models for my company's GitHub Enterprise account, and encouraging our teams to use those for their coding tasks.
