I’m interested to see if this spurs other countries to push back on this administration. Once you get a couple of countries to collectively stand firm is when things take a turn. Bullies can only push for so long
- bhouston 2mo agoWhat Canada is doing is turning to trade with other countries. It is the main solution we have to this issue. It is a long game, but necessary. Ganging up on the US isn't likely to work well.
- foogazi 2mo agoBecause the US is such a good market at some point “caving” makes it a good deal
- win311fwg 2mo agoThe trade deficit is what allows the US market to be a good market. If the US was closer to trade neutral or with a surplus it would be consuming considerably less and thus wouldn't be good anymore. Tough situation for other countries as if they don't agree then they can't access the market, but if they do agree to close the trade gap they'll decimate the market. The best option for them right now remains to withdraw from the market to the extent they must and hope things turn around soon so that things can go back to normal. The decimation option doesn't have a path to return to how things were and all they'll be left with is a bad market.
- gmerc 2mo agoSovereignty is not for sale
- make3 2mo agoit's also just waiting for Trump to be less powerful & making sure a bad precedent is not established, which is a good idea
- seydor 2mo agoPushing back against a US that is at this point economically and militarily dominant does nothing. It might push for cooperations outside the US-sphere.
- thrance 2mo agoAre they still dominant? They can't even win their war against Iran. And everyone is slowly moving away from the dollar. The US as world hegemon is counting its days.
- LeBit 2mo agoHasn’t won against Iran. Is out of ammo. Cannot win against Russia in the proxy war with Ukraine. Cannot match China with their long term energy plans. Has debt that explodes Has a president that sells early access to his tweets for 100k$ a year ; insider trading in the open. The USA are not in a good posture right now.
- Yiin 2mo agosaying US is fighting Russia in a proxy war is giving it credit it does not deserve

- foogazi 2mo ago> Cannot win against Russia in the proxy war with Ukraine. Ukraine existing even with Trump waging war against Iran negates this argument
- LeBit 2mo agoNot sure what your argument is. Ukraine is keeping its head out of the water despite Trump doing everything it can to help Russia. It shows how much Ukraine is resilient and innovative with drones. Trump has depleted the ammo needed by Ukraine and Taiwan. Imagine if he had helped Ukraine by forcing Musk to provide Starlink connections reliably and provided Patriots as needed.
- Pxtl 2mo agoIt won't. This isn't the first time Canada has had to stand alone against Trump while the rest of the world goes along to get along.
- hylaride 2mo agoTo be fair as a percentage of exports, Canada (and Mexico, in different ways) is at a completely different level of economic integration than pretty much any other country. We have no choice but to take a unique stand. That being said, we are so lucky to have Carney at this moment. Canada hasn’t exactly had flexible, informed, and eloquent leadership in a long time that has been willing to think and work for the long term.
- sbarre 2mo agoI suspect that instead of treating the US as a bully, and pushing back, we are treating the US as a troll, and just looking away instead. We'll go trade with other countries and stop giving the troll the attention it craves.
- Fordec 2mo agoThe Grey Rock Method, but at the nation state level.
- callc 2mo agoYou could also try a bowl of mashed potatoes on Donald’s head. This was one of the very embarrassing things that happened to Donald as a boy, done by Freddy Trump (his late older brother), when everyone had enough of him.
- foogazi 2mo agoCountries have their own self interest in mind Take the USMCA - Canada and the US at times team up against Mexico and then the pendulum swings, line item by line item - no one has anyone’s back and they all have short memories A deal with the US when others turns away from them is still a good deal
- make3 2mo agoI think it's a prisoners dilemma & that democracy, with its short term incentives, leads to politicians taking the easy way out, even if it creates bad precedent for their countries. obviously democracy is still better than the alternative though
