I recently revisited two books on data visualization by Willard C. Brinton, published in 1914 and 1939. What I found interesting is how much of the advice still feels current: keep charts simple, avoid misleading scales, be skeptical of unnecessary 3D, and think carefully about how the visual form affects interpretation. The techniques used to produce the charts were rather different. Some involved manually arranging hundreds of strips of paper, or even building physical 3D models.
