Switching to Omarchy was one of the best decisions I made last year that improved my everyday computing experience so much, and introduced me to so many amazing tools like neovim, tmux, tiling window managers, Arch Linux, and countless TUIs.. Haven't touched my old MacBook this year at all.
If you're in the market for a new laptop / operating system, I highly recommend you give it a try.
- nomilk 1mo agoHadn't realised (until your comment) that Omarchy doesn't work on non-intel macs; that's a shame. https://github.com/basecamp/omarchy/blob/quattro/manual/44-mac-support.md https://github.com/basecamp/omarchy/blob/quattro/manual/44-m...
- bigyabai 1mo agoIntel Macs have first party Linux drivers. They're much easier to support since they just behave like any normal x86 laptop would.
- winstonlee 1mo agoActually it does, thanks to the Ashahi Linux project. I'm using this fork on a M series https://github.com/malik-na/omarchy-mac https://github.com/malik-na/omarchy-mac Dual boot, it's not exactly the same as the main Omarchy, but it works fine out of the box. Software can be limited because not many packages has been compiled for ARM but we are software developers ;)
- KetoManx64 1mo agoAlmost always you can get the PKGBUILD file from either Arch Linux Gitlab or the AUR gitlab and just add the aarch64 version of the package to it and then install from that. I have an M1 and M2 macbook airs that I use for home/work and I think the only package I've actually hit a hard stop on is discord, everything else can just be built from source if they don't have a bin version..
- psp99 1mo agowhich laptop do you recommend, though? i type this on an m4 air that i wish i didnt buy; but i love its keyboard. i havea. t480s and do not like its keyboard...
- nomilk 1mo agoIn this video, DHH mentions Dell XPS and the AMD 395 Plus (he holds up the actual laptop, which I think is a HP ZBook Ultra G1a) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIdg-QBU6GU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIdg-QBU6GU
- nout 1mo agoThe high end one that's recommended is the New Dell XPS 14 that essentially looks like Macbook Pro. Also Michael Dell is a notable supporter of Omarchy, so hopefully that means some good support and stability.
- embedding-shape 1mo ago> Also Michael Dell is a notable supporter of Omarchy Ah yes, like NVIDIA having good support and stability on Linux for many many decades at this point because Jensen is a fan of Linux :) Don't purchase equipment and gear based on potential future support, vote properly with your wallet once things are supported instead, this is the only way these for-profit companies listen, and even that sometimes don't work. But don't go by what the CEO supposedly "supports" based on financial backing, it means little today.
- TiredOfLife 1mo agoDGX Spark and DGX Station ship with Ubuntu, every server they make runs linux, microsoft had to add gpu support to wsl because everything nvidia ai related works only on linux
- izacus 1mo agonVidia has provided feature parity for their GPUs between Windows and Linux for longer than even fglrx was a thing. Just because they don't give you all their source on command doesn't mean they weren't supporting Linux for decades. They were the only GPU that even worked halfway on Linux (and BSD) for a long time.
