I think one thing that made things worse was, before modern social media there was a semi-enforced need to categorise our public conversations (bbses, usenet, web forums); now it is kind of sludge since systems weight things nothing like a sane human would. Sure, searching is easier, but cohesion and connection is far worse, and that combination combined with things like flock etc all running through the same networks adds to the feeling many have of feeling too "known" by algorithms, which will likely get far worse, weirder, more uncanny, and spyish.
