I'm not so sure how big of an effect that had. I don't think most people believed any of those promised to begin with, so not delivering on them isn't the major problem. I think the big problem is that the major impacts the technology has had for ordinary people have been negative ones, and there isn't any clear reason to think that's going to change anytime soon. And I don't think that's a problem that messaging can fix.
