Show HN: terminal-code – VS Code inside the terminal
- kalamarico 2mo agoHahaha!! This VScode ide definitely deserves it! Fantastic idea! You've my vote mate, good work!
- _345 2mo agoHow does it compare performance wise? Feature parity? Can you spawn shells in the terminal pane or is there no terminal pane and you're expected to being your own multiplexer?
- kruskakli 1mo agoor just fake the layout using zellij, fzf and a little scripting... hehe https://github.com/etnt/my-zellij-config https://github.com/etnt/my-zellij-config
- justindotdev 1mo agojust use neovim :)
- sevkih 1mo agoAs a shell then rum terminal code inside
- mcbuilder 1mo ago`emacs -nw` with DOOM Emacs for me. :)
- depressedlesor 1mo agoand spend the next month configurating it instead of actually coding?
- lostmsu 1mo agoI got excited that it's like TurboPascal, but this is basically VS Code over RDP (uses video streaming over kitty protocol).
- CrimsonCape 1mo agoWow, bloated electron app running over bloated graphics stack, tell me more...
- red_admiral 1mo agoThis is coming dangerously close to reinventing the X (as in X11) protocol.
- chandramoulyKK 1mo agoMade me smile for sure!
- DaOne256 1mo agoThat's exactly what I am looking for several years. Because VSCode is a bit slow via RDP or X11 Remote. I will try it out when I'm back at work.
- RupertWiser 1mo agoWhy not use vscode remote via ssh port forwarding? I just use it via my browser.
- bip-bop-robot 1mo agoThere is ssh extension and remote containers extension, they work together.
- xienze 1mo agoYou can run it directly from a web browser too.
- xyztimm 1mo agoBut does it also run a terminal emulator inside, which runs terminal-code inside, which…
- aruggirello 1mo agoIt does! I'm terrified https://code.visualstudio.com/updates/v1_110#_terminal https://code.visualstudio.com/updates/v1_110#_terminal
- gerdesj 1mo agovscode server and links2 probably wont cut it 8)
- rvz 1mo agoWhy? This just embeds electron and shoves it into the terminal instead of the native frontend. All the same downsides of Electron with practically little to no upside other than the same folks who ruined the web are now ruining the terminal.
- Ferret7446 1mo agoIIUC it works over SSH which would be kind of nice I suppose
- felooboolooomba 1mo agoToday is the day I realized that vscode started off as a clone of vim with smoke and mirrors.
- jballanc 1mo agoterminal-code has been replaced by a shell script which 1) Generates a syslog message at level LOG_EMERG; 2) reduces the user's disk quota by 100K; and 3) RUNS ED!!!!!! (adapted from the venerable "Ed, man! !man ed": https://www.gnu.org/fun/jokes/ed-msg.html https://www.gnu.org/fun/jokes/ed-msg.html)
- greenpizza13 1mo agoSir, this is a Wendy’s?
- mkl 1mo agoIt uses the kitty graphics protocol, if you're wondering how it can look like that instead of being rendered with text characters.
- Arshad-Talpur 1mo agothough still needs some tweeks may be on design and function both sides but idea seems to be fantastic !
- vp_studio 1mo agoThis looks like an amazing idea - pretty much the first thing close to a reason why I would consider installing anything Microsoft related on my Linux.
- dat999zx 1mo agoHaha cool idea dude. But why?
- anishvarghese 1mo agoReally impressive work, does this terminal environment support standard VS Code extensions?
- robpruzan 1mo agoYes!
- shangyu1994 1mo agoThis looks really interesting! I personally really like reviewing diffs in VS Code’s diff view, does terminal-code support that?
