My career didn't really take off until I got kids in my 30s. And my wife's took off even harder; she's now director at a Dutch government organisation. I went from fairly average developer when they were born, to self-employed freelancer with increasingly cool, complex projects on my CV, to now starting my own business.
Sure, not Steve Jobs level, but pretty good. We both worked 4 days a week most of that time (I a bit more consistently than my wife), and took plenty of time off to do stuff with the kids.
