I think there's another misconception here, or rather an incorrect conflation of two things: Unconditional love and the concept of Hell. The two are not mutually exclusive. Even though you love your child unconditionally that doesn't mean you'll never punish them. Also the concept of God becomes substantially less abstract when you think of it (at least from the traditional monotheist perspective) as the "Creator" and the "Created".
