We have this in NZ too. The trouble is those books are not lent out. You have to go to the book. Also, with the proliferation of small print runs, self-published autobiographies, etc, I think the National Library no longer attempts to collect a copy of all publications.
If these AI companies were creating public repositories where researchers could access digital copies then I would not have such a problem with this, but that is not what they are doing. The ability of researchers to cite these books as sources is being snuffed out.
