- josefritzishere 2mo agoWhere do I sign up? Seriously. ¿Dónde solicito el empleo?
- anemic 2mo agoThey probably all are former software developers. I would imagine the waitlist is very long
- HeyLaughingBoy 2mo agoReminds me of the movie I saw this weekend with the homeless guy who said he used to be a software developer at Apple, but there were some "disciplinary issues."
- foodandart 2mo agoLooks amazing. Just finagle a small solar array for power, some backup batteries and a satellite uplink for the web and I'd be there in a heartbest.
- epolanski 2mo agoBut why? You can "isolate" in less isolated places. Also what's the point if the activity you're describing is linking through other people anyway (just over internet).
- ASalazarMX 2mo agoI think they'd intend to consume content, not to interact with it, but commenting here discredits my interpretation. Anyway, isolation and solitude seem lovely until you get appendicitis.
- T3OU-736 2mo agoOr a nice tooth issue. Those get even dicier in austere environments.
- jambalaya8 2mo agoDon't think the mall would like that. </sarcasm>
- RationPhantoms 2mo agoPlease don't romanticize isolation. We have enough elderly folk existing in dire loneliness in assisted-living facilities and nursing homes who understand the true definition of it.
- applfanboysbgon 2mo agoPeople aren't allowed to enjoy something because other people don't enjoy it? Other people are experiencing something they didn't choose, so nobody should be allowed to choose it?
- dumberquestions 2mo agoI think they're suggesting that those who romanticize it actually just have never truly experienced it, and will not appreciate it if they do.
- ChrisArchitect 2mo agoChilean Patagonia, not Patagonia, Inc. (/s though from the title did consider for a second that it meant a retail store in some isolated place)
- bayganyo 2mo ago"At the End of the World" disambiguates it pretty well, I think.
- estetlinus 2mo agoPhew. I am sitting here in my fleece feeling attacked.
- bluealienpie 2mo agoPatagonia as it’s referred to today was never unpopulated, it still has an indigenous population. This narrative is used everywhere for vast untamed wilderness that just ignores the many people still living there.
- volkl48 2mo agoI'm certainly willing to be corrected, but as far as I can tell from some brief searching, indigenous populations that exist in the region today aren't living some nomadic life out in the wilderness either. They're living in cities and towns like almost everyone else does. So a post like this is still correct in how it's presented. Almost no one is actually living out at "the end of the world" in the wilderness with few or no other people around, and it is potentially a topic of interest/curiosity to hear about those who do.
- kev009 2mo agoThe lonely men sewing VC's ugly sweater vests, at the financial end of the world.
- glimshe 2mo agoIncredible photos. First thing that came to my mind was an awareness of the contrast between "the full breadth of humanity experience" vs "Silicon Valley's view of humanity". I don't know if that makes sense, but it's literally the first thing that came to my mind.
- tocs3 2mo agoSeeing the photos, the first thing that came to mind was "Wow,really well kept and clean."
- wxw 2mo agoThese photos are beautiful: https://media.newyorker.com/photos/6a7f7ed55b6cfa7eff424505/master/w_1600,c_limit/Zatarain-Coiron_02.jpg https://media.newyorker.com/photos/6a7f7ed55b6cfa7eff424505/...
- roblh 2mo agoFor real. Amazing work. And also, there’s a reason people refuse to give up shooting on film. Especially medium format film.
- embedding-shape 2mo agoTo be fair, all the folks who refuse to give up something has some sort of reasoning for doing so :)
- HeyLaughingBoy 2mo agoNice winter coat on that pony.
- sriacha 2mo agoGood article about living at a remote estancia at the bottom of Argentina, January 1971, 'The Housewife at the End of the World'. Not too much has changed since then. https://archive.org/details/edg-ng-1961/edg%20NG%201971-01%20139-1%20Jan/page/n129/mode/2up https://archive.org/details/edg-ng-1961/edg%20NG%201971-01%2...
- _whiteCaps_ 2mo agoI was just looking up lightkeeper positions in my province. Unfortunately no openings right now. But it would be an interesting job for an introvert like myself.
- bell-cot 2mo agoNot to imply real knowledge of lightkeeping - but that sounds far less precarious, dispossessing, onerous, and dangerous than being one of the Puesteros.
- dingdongditchme 2mo agowouldnt get my hopes up too high, worldwide it seems there may be less than 100 left: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lighthouse_keeper https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lighthouse_keeper (most in Canada, interestingly)
- _whiteCaps_ 2mo agoWe've got a lot of coastline here. :)
- HeyLaughingBoy 2mo agoIn the US, IIRC, you had to be a member of the Coast Guard. Isn't it the same in Canada?
- _whiteCaps_ 2mo agoAFAIK no - you need basic first aid, a radio operator license, and other things like that. But I actually haven't looked at it that seriously since there aren't any openings right now.
- giardini 2mo agoThe above link, https://archive.ph/XDM2H https://archive.ph/XDM2H does not work for me. However I can see that there is plenty of food (perhaps too much) at the end of the world.
- davidw 2mo agoYesterday I was reading about this place in Oregon https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_L._Shirk_Ranch https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_L._Shirk_Ranch Today, with a modern vehicle, it is 1.5 hours from the nearest 'town' and 2 from the county seat, which has 2000 people. I can't imagine how remote that must have been in 1900. What the seasons must have looked like going by, and how far the rest of the world must have felt.
- MrDrone 2mo agoI recently spent some time out that way staying at the Hart Mountain Refuge and visited the place where Oregon, California and Nevada meet just south of nearby Adel. I was fascinated about how remote everything is even in a modern vehicle. I couldn't imagine traveling that area by foot or horse. Eastern Oregon is a fascinating and beautiful place. I wrote a bit about it on my blog. https://object.computer/2026/07/15/summer-slows-and-trips-do.html https://object.computer/2026/07/15/summer-slows-and-trips-do...
- davidw 2mo agoGood writing and a fun trip to some really remote places. Hit me up if you're ever in Bend, happy to get a beer and chat about some of those places. Did you see the pictographs at Hart Mountain? That's actually one bit of Oregon that I have never had the time to explore. Have you been to Steens? That whole area is super interesting too. Besides the natural features of the mountain itself, and Alvord desert on the other side, the history of Pete French is like something out of a western. More recently, the Riddle Brothers ranch that they have preserved is worth a stop.
- fipar 2mo ago> “What a shame to come to love the land that will never be mine.” This reminded me of a song about the related job of arriero, aptly titled "El arriero", which includes these lyrics: "Las penas y las vaquitas se van por la misma senda. Las penas son de nosotros, las vaquitas son ajenas" Which (loosing the musicality) can be translated as: "The sorrows and the cows go down the same road. The sorrows belong to us, the cows do not"
- arodako 2mo agoIf you like these photos you should check out the paintings by artist Randy Wheeler. Like this photographer Randy embedded himself there and painted landscapes and portraits of guachos and Puesteros. https://www.realcowboyart.com/painting-category/patagonia/ https://www.realcowboyart.com/painting-category/patagonia/
- josefritzishere 2mo agoRecommended reading: In Patagonia by Bruce Chatwin, and Idle Days in Patagonia by W.H Hudson.
- worthless-trash 2mo agoI met an Australian version of this when I was a kid. I wore about it here on hn. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46462420 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46462420
