I agree with your take. There's a lot of things we don't have to have that provide us a lot of value, so we have them anyway.
Sliced bread (commercially available after the automobile!) comes to mind, as do antibiotics--which also have some negative consequences to go along with the benefits.

- readthenotes1 2mo agoYes, I am referring to commercially available sliced bread. From what happened during WW2 when it was very briefly interdicted, I'd say it was far more impactful than wi-fi
