This why I oppose national healthcare. I don’t want to pay for other people to get healthcare. I don’t want people to get higher wages for jobs in retail or restaurants because I don’t want to pay more. I’m a greedy bastard.

I don’t want people to get higher wages for jobs in retail or restaurants because I don’t want to pay more. I’m a greedy bastard. You're jumping to conclusions about my character. National healthcare is good! But narrowly targeting a specific economic activity, seemingly arbitrarily, when that same econsonomic acitivity also provides employment to the poorer segment of the population makes no sense!
- czgov 2mo agoExactly. It’s why minimum wages are stupid. If a person is in dire straights let them be able to take a job for $1 an hour. Employment is the end that justifies the means. Notions like dignity, fairness, exploitation don’t belong in a capitalist society that is doing its best to become Ferenginar.
- andsoitis 2mo ago> It’s why minimum wages are stupid Disagree. The spectrum of potential economic contribution by the population is too wide to give a humane life to everyone. So it is moral to provide a baseline because the unborn do not get to decide what body or family or life they get born into. > Notions like dignity, fairness, exploitation don’t belong in a capitalist society I think you misunderstand capitalism. One of the main moral premises that capitalism is built on is self-ownership and voluntary exchange. You are not the property of others. You can own things. Others can’t coerce you and vice versa.
- czgov 2mo agoNice of you to not give the full quote. … that is doing its best to become Ferenginar. I didn’t say these things don’t belong in a capitalist society. So it is moral to provide a baseline because… and voluntary exchange. Others can’t coerce you and vice versa. You can’t pay someone willing to work for $1 an hour but we believe in voluntary exchange and no one can coerce you.
