MBTI is a data point - it's unwise to use a single data point for understanding oneself and others. For me personally, 'my' type accords with the type of person I am and have been, and - as one aspect of the psychiatric consultations I was having to sort of various issues - really helped me a lot. And, anecdotally, it gave me some kind of broad framework for understanding others, their motivations and actions, something I had struggled with (and still do, I must admit).
