Ask HN: Local-Only Microsoft Word?
Let's say I bought a new PC. New, so running Windows 11. And let's say I wanted Microsoft Word, and thought that Libre Office wasn't good enough because reasons. And let's say I wanted Microsoft Word that lived on my PC, not off in the cloud somewhere - something I could still use even without an internet connection, and where all my files were local and stayed local.
What was the last version of Word that was local-only? Can one still buy a new copy? If so, from where?

- JohnFen 2mo agoI know that Office 2016 runs locally. Later versions might, but I don't know for certain. You can't get 2016 new, of course, but a quick eBay search turned up a number of new old stock copies. It looks like they're going for around $60.

- AnimalMuppet 2mo agoI can live with that (if I understood you correctly). I can accept being online at the time I register it... if the registration process still works.
- Rotundo 2mo agoMicrosoft Word 2024, part of Office 2024. One-time purchase, or via subscription: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/get-started-with-office-2024 https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/get-started-wi...
- AnimalMuppet 2mo agoI did not realize that one-time purchase was still an option. Thanks.
