I don't understand why you think Google should support Microsoft's proprietary protocol rather than Microsoft supporting open protocols.

  What open standard? IMAP? There is no adequate mail open standard.

    IMAP is quite adequate. It's imperfect, but it's open and it's extensible. The same can't be said of ActiveSync.

  It's a lot easier and cheaper to switch from Gmail to Outlook than it is to switch from Windows Phone to Android. Email is email, but my choice in phone is made on many factors and Android and iOS don't meet those many factors.
