All apes cannot produce vitamin C. In fact no dry nosed primates can. Also fruit bats generally can't, as well as some passerines, and some bony fish.

There may be a survival advantage in not having to metabolise a vitamin readily available through diet. Altogether, a neutral adaptation/mutation [1]. It's still a good case of nature optimising for leanness like a private-equity boss. And a good example of why something like GLP-1 may have similarly been optimized down for a world no longer relevant.
