No, we simply need to (the state level is the most likely place to do this) strip localities of the power to limit housing density by zoning restrictions and discretionary de ial or delay of permitting.
That’s the barrier to adequate housing everywhere there is unmet demand driving high prices. You don’t need either monetary (interest rates) or fiscal (taxes/subsidies) hammers to get supply built, not will you do much by hitting the problem with those hammers as long as localities are literally prohibiting building.
- EA-3167 2mo agoSaying, "Simply" before a generally extremely challenging notion doesn't actually make it simple or even plausible. Your idea is only simple if a critical mass of people who vote agree with you, and they don't.
- dragonwriter 2mo agoThe policy is simple, the politics of adopting it may be difficult. Different issues. But the bigger point isn't the simplicity or not of the policy or its adoption, but that other options will not work without it, and will not be necessary with it.
