Ask HN: New Projet Backup
We're building a tool that turns your prod backups into auto-refreshed, anonymized test fixtures. Do you struggle with keeping test data realistic and up-to-date? How do you handle this today?
- verdverm 3mo agoWhy would I let some random upstart have access to my prod environment? Start some place more palletable
- dobibag 3mo agoFair point, and you're right to be skeptical. That's exactly why we designed it to have zero prod access. We don't connect to your database. We read your existing backup files (pg_dump, restic snapshots, whatever you already use) from your own S3/R2/GCS. The anonymization runs as a sidecar or CLI inside your infrastructure — sensitive data never leaves your environment. Think of it as a post-processor for backups you're already taking, not a replacement for your backup tool. Your current backup workflow stays untouched; we just make the output actually useful for dev/test. The format is also fully open ([link to spec]) so there's zero lock-in. Happy to walk through the threat model if useful.
