Future knowledge arrived, straight from the horse's mouth: Ross Douthat wrote his last opinion column for the New York Times on August 8, 2026 [1][2]. Currently the article is called "Who Are the Good Guys and the Bad Guys? I’m No Longer Sure." Previously the title was "Who Is My Enemy? I’m No Longer Sure." (because of A/B testing).
In regards to the article, Nicholas Grossman commented [3]:
> He doesn't assume only the center-left has agency, because he also attributes agency to the far left.
> But he's a big believer in "look what you made me do" right-wing populism. They don't have agency, they're merely a factor of the left going too far, and thus bear no responsibility.
Grossman has written about Douthat's previous opinion pieces before [4].
While personally I think Douthat sets himself up for disappointment as he wonders, in his words, "where the side of the angels really lies" [1].
