I actually think it's just a poor title, "my server runs on a phone now" would be better.
As it is, I expected the server to now have a modem, to be operating as a phone.
- carb 2mo agothat title might be easier to parse, but it's less poetic and less attention grabbing
- OJFord 2mo agoThe goal as a blog author should not be to grab attention and mislead readers into starting your article only to realise it's not what they expected and were interested in.
- lukan 2mo agoWhy do you think misleading was the goal? To me it was a clear and a very fitting title. (But my first language is german, maybe that has some influence)
- OJFord 2mo agoI doubt it was OP's goal. Commenter I responded to on the other hand said that the original was more 'attention grabbing' than my clarifying amendment, and that's what I said ought not be the goal.
- PaulDavisThe1st 2mo agoThat also elides the distinction between "the server" as a piece of hardware and "the server" as a piece of software, which in an HN context is not insignificant.
- da_chicken 2mo agoOnly in as much as "phone" as telephony hardware, "phone" as telephony software, and "phone" as a shortening of "smartphone" in the same way. The author should have swapped the title with the subtitle: "rooting a CMF Phone 1 to run my personal infrastructure at home".
