The article mentions that a breach of the Darien Gap in 2022 is where all of this started.
Sterile mosquito drops were stopped due to the pandemic, plus over 250k migrants crossing the gap contributed to the breakdown of a biological barrier. Pretty wild to think of the long term consequences.
- adrian_b 3mo agoThe fact that sterile mosquito drops were stopped due to the pandemic, was the cause, together with the fact that after the pandemic no measures were taken to compensate this, even if it was obvious that they are imperatively needed. There is no relationship between the number of migrants and this. If there was an increase in smuggling cattle over the Gap, that could have contributed, but the human migrants do not carry the flies.
- ricardobeat 3mo agoThe article is about humans carrying the fly larvae, we can’t really know, can we? Not only that, but this volume of movement opens up trails; people bring along dogs and other animals that can also be carriers. When I lived near cattle farming areas, sanitary barriers where both cars and people had to pass through a pool of biocide were common, to kill any eggs being carried in the dirt on the tires and shoes.
