- wredcoll 2mo agoLike a lot of things, society would probably benefit if we had caps on how much a single entity could own.
- al_borland 2mo agoOr maybe just a heavy tax on arbitrage.
- al_borland 2mo agoI'm wondering if this can be used to hunt down squatters and take domains from them, for example, if they have the domain marked as for sale in DNS, while also renewing the domain. If a renewal happens while someone has a domain listed for sale, they should give up all rights to that domain and it should go back on the open market for a sane price.
- slig 2mo agoDo you have any domains that you purchased with the intention to use and haven't been able to use them yet?
- bigbuppo 2mo agoAnd what is the definition of a domain squatter?
- edoceo 2mo agoWith real-property squatting is using what someone else owns (land) w/o permission. Domains are only rented. If you rent land but don't use it the way someone else would it's not squatting. So, renting a domain that someone else wants and not using it in the way they think it should be used isn't squatting, correct? I agree it's a problem when I want a domain and it looks unused to me. I don't think it's really squatting. I think it's also a jerk move to control resources just to extract w/o developing those resources. But that also happens with real-property. All that to say: "squatting" on a domain is a "hard problem".
- inigyou 2mo agoIt's usually pretty obvious though because the website is an ad for the domain itself.
- Anoian 2mo agoRenting a domain for the the sole sake of selling the ability to rent it to someone else or even worse: Renting it at a higher price to someone else and pocketing that extra money every year without providing any additional service. Bonus points if you also track recent companies that have been created and immediately buy also the related domains and social media handles and extort the founders of the new companies.
- system2 2mo agoMaybe domain hoarding should be illegal. 1 domain per person, 1 per registered business. That would make the world a better place but I am dreaming.
- inigyou 2mo agoOnly if you also make it illegal for the registrar and registry to cancel it. You also mandate KYC on everything. No more WHOIS privacy - if you have a domain name, the whole internet knows your home address.
- qack 2mo agoI totally agree with you! It's so hard to get a good domain name these days. It's annoying that people take advantage of that to line their own pockets.
