The only reason anyone knows about the switch between manifest 2 and 3 is that the only meaningful difference is the crippled ad blocking ability. Nobody knows any other difference unless they are an extension developers or worked on making the Internet a worse place.
- armadyl 2mo agoI mean you’re right about the awareness of it due to ad blocking but > Nobody knows any other difference unless they are an extension developers or worked on making the Internet a worse place. MV3 comes with a ton of security improvements over MV2, a side effect is the perceived weakening of ad blocking extensions but the benefits outweigh the cons. MV2 effectively allowed a permanently open RCE pathway. The browser itself should ideally be handling ad blocking as it’s more effective and efficient at it (Brave, Vanadium, Trivalent). Safari has already been on an MV3-like extension system for years yet only Chromium draws ire. I mean they got flack at first but it died off and now there’s no real difference.
- lelanthran 2mo ago> The browser itself should ideally be handling ad blocking "The fox himself should ideally be guarding the henhouse"... I mean, you do realise that google has a conflict of interest when it comes to blocking ads, right?
- crazygringo 2mo agoRight, but there is no meaningful difference in terms of ad blocking ability. It's all theoretical. In practice, uBlock Origin Lite works amazingly on MV3. In my experience, it blocks all the ads. And I've been using it for a while now.
- Larrikin 2mo agoThe creator and maintainer of uBlock Origin has said it's inferior and listed why. I don't understand the point of your anecdote.
- crazygringo 2mo agoIt's inferior in theory. In practice, it's just as good. That's the point -- was my comment somehow unclear?
- Larrikin 2mo agoThe point is that your anecdote has opposing obvious data from the literal creator backing it up that the solution you are using is inferior, even if you personally think its fine. Lots of people browse the internet with ads on and think its fine too. Everyone else can use their eyes and read why and see its inferior so your anecdote is as pointless as a home remedy. >Edit Comment history suggest these kind of replies is the point of the account, maybe it is true maybe its not
- crazygringo 2mo agoPlease link said "opposing obvious data"? Also, do you understand the distinction between "in theory" and "in practice"? Because nothing you have written so far suggests that you are understanding the main point I'm making. And if you're going to attack the quality of my comment history, perhaps consider the fact that I have over 80,000 account upvotes, virtually exclusively from comments instead of submissions. I've never once had to mention anything like that to anyone else on HN, but I've never once had anyone else try to impugn my reputation the way you are either. Perhaps you might want to review the guidelines: > Be kind. Don't be snarky. Converse curiously; don't cross-examine. - Larrikin 2mo agoYour Internet points on the leaderboard do not make you a moderator on the site. But farming points is easy if you selectively reply to or make decisive comments. It's a pattern for most of the leader board if you actually look into what they reply to https://news.ycombinator.com/leaders https://news.ycombinator.com/leaders https://github.com/uBlockOrigin/uBOL-home/wiki/Frequently-asked-questions-(FAQ) https://github.com/uBlockOrigin/uBOL-home/wiki/Frequently-as... You could have found that link in 30 seconds on Google if you actually wanted to know
- wolvoleo 2mo agoDoes it also block the background tracking you don't see with the same effectiveness? Also the amount of configurability is extremely reduced. I personally need that because I use custom lists to reduce websites to just a list of headlines (similar to hacker news). Removing all the highlights, polls, other crap I don't need. I mainly use Firefox anyway so I use the real ublock origin.
