It's restitution to society, for the cost of the damage done.
- harimau777 2mo agoHow can it be restitution if it doesn't help the victims?
- exe34 2mo agoSociety pays the cost of mental health in reduced productivity, healthcare, accidents, homicides, etc.
- harimau777 2mo agoSure, but individuals pay the cost too. Society also has an obligation to make them whole or to at least give them accountability.

- 59percentmore 2mo agoLet's be accurate. We're a first-world shithole. I'll be explicit in saying that this is because "third-world shithole" is often used as a pseudo-euphemism for "brown people reside there" - as in, this place is dysfunctional because of its brown residents. And, for the US, this is just simply not the case. We are an ethnically pluralistic society, historically and largely run by white men, and, yes, something of a shithole precisely because our government and courts exhibit a particularly Western flavor of corruption.

- exe34 2mo ago> Will Facebook change its policies? No. That's why fines need to be escalating.
- reaperducer 2mo agoIt is more money for the courts. In the United States, fines don't go to the courts. Also, the article specifies where the money goes, so clearly your invented outrage trumped your willingness to read the article.
